The Role of the Yoruba Diaspora in Preserving Cultural Heritage
The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has urged members of the Yoruba community living abroad to view the promotion of their native languages, traditions, and cultural heritage as a critical responsibility. He emphasized that this effort is essential for safeguarding the identity of the Yoruba people and ensuring that their rich culture and history continue to thrive across generations.
This call was made during the Asia International Summit 2025, which focused on the importance of diaspora Yoruba activities in promoting Yoruba heritage globally. The event was organized by the Oodua Progressive Union (OPU), with its Asia chapter playing a central role in bringing together leaders from across the region.
Iba Adams, who serves as the Global Convener of OPU, highlighted the deep cultural roots of the Yoruba people. He pointed out that their traditions, values, and language are integral to Nigeria’s national identity. According to him, principles such as discipline, integrity, social justice, and patriotism are deeply embedded in Yoruba culture.
He also stressed that the Yoruba diaspora plays a vital role in connecting the homeland with the global community. Through cultural festivals, language initiatives, traditional arts, and community organizations, they help maintain the vibrancy of Yoruba culture around the world.
For example, in Malaysia, the OPU organizes events like Oodua Day, football competitions, and humanitarian programs. Similar activities take place in countries such as Japan, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and the Philippines. These efforts ensure that younger generations remain connected to their heritage and prevent them from losing touch with their roots.
Iba Adams noted that these activities not only reinforce cultural identity but also enhance Nigeria’s global image. They foster mutual understanding and respect among diverse communities worldwide.

Iba Adams emphasized that promoting the Yoruba language and culture within diaspora communities is crucial for their survival. Professor Kolawole Raheem, a guest speaker at the summit, called for more active participation from the Yoruba diaspora to strengthen their cultural identity. He warned that Western countries, alongside China, are influencing African cultures through the spread of their lifestyles, including food, clothing, arts, and education. This influence risks eroding unique cultural identities, such as that of the Yoruba.
Professor Raheem stressed the need for self-preservation and leveraging the uniqueness of Yoruba culture to drive sustainable socio-economic development. He urged the community to protect their environment and cultural heritage for future generations.

In his welcome address, Asiwaju Olakanye Franklin, the Asia Continental Coordinator of OPU, described the summit as a symbol of unity, collective vision, and cultural pride. He emphasized that the event provided an opportunity for reflection, strategic planning, and purpose-driven action.
Franklin called for a redefinition of the group’s role in the development of Yorubaland and the prosperity of its people globally. He outlined areas such as cultural preservation, youth empowerment, educational initiatives, and economic collaboration as key focus points.
He also praised Iba Adams for his leadership and visionary approach, noting that his efforts have united Yoruba people across the globe. His work in promoting values, preserving heritage, and strengthening collective identity has left a lasting impact.
